ラジオは「the radio」テレビは「on TV」になる理由
について投稿しました。果たして
Native講師はこの問いにどう答えたでしょうか？
英語を母語とする講師が文法的な説明を十分にできない理由には
いくつかあります。
(1) ネイティブスピーカーは「感覚」で使い分けている
ネイティブスピーカーは、幼少期から英語を
「感覚的」に身につけています。そのため、
文法的な背景や理論を体系的に学ぶ機会が少ない場合があります。
例えば、「なぜ ‘on TV’ なのか？」と聞かれても、
「そういうものだから」としか答えられないことが多いです。
これは、私たちが日本語の助詞（例：「を」と「に」の違い）について深く考えずに使っているのと似ています。
(2) 英会話講師の専門性の限界
特にオンライン英会話の講師は、
会話の練習に特化している場合が多く、文法や言語学的な背景知識を
深く学んでいないことがあります。
また、資格やトレーニングの水準が講師によって大きく異なるため、
文法的な質問に対応できるスキルを持っていない講師も少なくありません。
(3) 日本人学習者の質問に対応する準備が不足している
日本人学習者は、英語を「文法的に理解したい」というニーズが強いです。しかし、ネイティブ講師の中には、
そのニーズに応えるための知識や説明力を持っていない人もいます。
「習慣的に使っている」という回答は、
講師が文法的な背景を知らないことを隠すための表現で
あるようにも思えます。
講師の資格についての考察
(1) 英会話講師の役割
英会話講師の主な役割は、「会話力を向上させること」です。
そのため、文法の細かい質問に答えることが
必須要件ではないと考えているのかも知れません。
(2) 資格の有無とスキルのギャップ
英語講師には、TESOL（英語教授法）や
CELTA（ケンブリッジ英語教授資格）などの資格を持つ人もいますが、
これらの資格が必須でないスクールも多いです。
資格を持たない講師は、文法的な質問に対応するスキルが不足している可能性があります。そのため、学習者が求めるレベルに
達していない講師もいます。
(3) 学習者の期待に応えるための講師選ぶ
文法的な質問に答えられる講師を求める場合は、
資格の有無や文法指導の経験を重視して講師を選ぶことが大切です。
対面式スクールでネイティブ講師の面会の際に下記を質問します。
“Why do we say ‘the radio’ when referring to the radio, but ‘on TV’ without using ‘the’ for television? Why is ‘the’ necessary for radio but not for TV?”
ほとんどのネイティブ講師の答えは
“Because that’s just the way it is. We naturally use them differently without thinking about it.”
今までの採用試験で、
正確に答えられた講師には未だ出会っていません。
(4)文法指導の重要性
英会話を学ぶ際に、文法的な背景を知ることは非常に重要です。
なぜなら、 文法を理解することで、正確な英語を使えるようになります。
学習者が「なぜ？」と疑問を持つことは、
言語習得において非常に重要なプロセスです。
もし講師がその疑問に答えられない場合、
学習者のモチベーションが下がる可能性があります。
「ラジオは ‘the radio’、テレビは ‘on TV’」という表現の違いは、
文化的・歴史的背景に基づいています。
ネティブ英会話講師が「習慣的に使っている」としか説明できない場合、

So—how did native English-speaking teachers respond to this question?
Why Many Native Speakers Struggle to Explain Grammar
There are several reasons why even native English teachers often cannot give a clear grammatical explanation.
(1) Native speakers use English by intuition
Native speakers acquire English naturally from early childhood.
Because of this, they often use correct forms intuitively rather than through conscious grammar study.
So when asked, “Why do we say on TV?” many will simply respond,
“That’s just the way it is.”
This is similar to how Japanese speakers use particles like 「を」and「に」without consciously thinking about grammatical rules.
(2) The limits of conversation teachers’ expertise
Especially in online English schools, many instructors focus on conversation practice.

Teachers without such training often lack the background to explain grammar accurately.
As a result, their lessons may not meet the expectations of grammar-focused learners.
(3) Choosing the right teacher for your goals
If you want a teacher who can answer grammar-related questions,
it’s important to check their qualifications and experience in teaching grammar, not just conversation skills.
Real Interview Example
In face-to-face interviews with native teachers, we often ask this question:
“Why do we say the radio when referring to the radio, but on TV without using the for television?
Why is the necessary for radio but not for TV?”
Most native speakers respond with:
“Because that’s just the way it is. We naturally use them differently without thinking about it.”
So far, we have never met a teacher who could answer this question accurately during an interview.
